New Year’s eve 2019

Oporto will celebrate the New Year 2019 with 3 days of cultural events leading to the famous 16 minutes of fireworks that blow over Avenida dos Aliados every year. This year, the Oporto City Council is expecting a record number of people welcoming the New Year in the street. Latest forecasts are pointing at 200 000 people.

Wizz Air and Ryanair – New routes.

Wizz Air and Ryanair launched new routes to connect Oporto with France and the UK. In the case of Wizz Air, they are proposing three new connections between Oporto and London (Luton) starting the 2nd July 2019. Flights are being scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays every week, with tickets being already available for purchase. Regarding Ryanair, they are planning to connect Oporto and Brest starting from April 2019. Flights are being scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays.

This clearly good news for Oporto increasing its attractiveness in a significant way!

Two flea markets in Silo Auto

There will be two typical  markets side by side next Saturday (15th December 2018) in Silo Auto – Oporto. The Flea market will take place in floors 6th and 7th between 13h00 and 18h00, whereas the Mini Portobelo will take place between 13h30 and 15h30 and 16h00 and 18h00. Selling mostly old and used items along with some antiques, these markets are great options to buy unique products. 

Both markets are sponsored by the Oporto City Council and admission is free. In order to get shoppers in the mood to buy stuff, there will be DJ’s and food trucks.

New air route between Oporto and Brazil

The Azul Brazilian airline will start flying between Oporto and Campinas from June 2019. The airline intends to have three weekly connections between these two cities using Airbus A330 planes, each with a maximum capacity of 272 passengers.

Oporto will be the second European city that receives flights from this Brazilian carrier. Flights from Campinas will depart every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 17h20 (local time), whereas flights from Oporto will depart every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9h25 (local time). Tickets are already available for sale!!

This is clearly another route to bring more Brazilian tourists to Oporto and Europe!!

Ice rinks for Xmas in Oporto

There will be two ice rinks available in Oporto during Christmas time for everyone that wants to skate. The rinks are already open to the public and anyone that wants to use them needs to pay an admission fee:

  • 3.50 euros for 20 minutes in both rinks
  • 5 euros for 60 minutes in the Praça Dom João I rink
  • 6 euros for 60 minutes in the Praça de Mouzinho Albuquerque rink

Both rinks will be open for business until the 6th January 2018. Working hours range, in general, from 10h00 until 22h00, with special times for weekends and bank holidays.

If you intend to be in Oporto during the holidays, then this may be an interesting option to entertain you in true Christmas spirit!!

Oporto Christmas Village

The Porto Christmas Village is taking place between the 24th November and the 30th December 2018 in the Alfândega do Porto building. In its first edition, this initiative aims at providing children and families with several Xmas related experiences that range from food, drinks, ice rink, toys, workshops, Xmas market, Virtual reality and much more.

The Village is going to be open between 15h00 and 20h30 during weekdays and 11h00 to 22h00 during the weekends. The admission price is 5 euros per adult and 3.5 euros per child. There is also a family pack of 15 euros available. On Mondays, children will not pay and during the week, entry is free after 19h00.

2.3 million Xmas lights in Oporto

More than 2 million LED lights will be installed in 59 streets, avenues, gardens and buildings in Oporto to celebrate Xmas and New Year’s eve 2018. This is one of the biggest investments in Xmas lights from the Oporto City Council and the lights should be available from the 1st December 2018 until the 6th January 2019. To celebrate this investment, there will be a special event on the 1st December at 18h00 with all Xmas lights being switched on in Avenida dos Aliados (the place where one of the biggest Xmas trees of Portugal can be found – 40 metres height and 29 000 lights).

Besides lights, there will also be other elements of Xmas decoration being used throughout Oporto.

End of year Oporto race – São Silvestre

The 25th edition of the Oporto São Silvestre Race will take place on the 30th December 2018. The race starts at 18h00 in Avenida dos Aliados and will finish as well in Avenida dos Aliados. There are two different options to participate in this race:

  • The 10km race with a limit of 10 000 runners.
  • The 5km walk with a limit of 5 000 participants.

The São Silvestre is organised by Runporto and is sponsored by the Oporto City Council. Enrolment is already open for this year’s edition and if you want to know more about this event, please visit the Runporto website for more info!!
