Fashion City – March 2018

In order to accommodate this year’s Portugal fashion shows, there will be a new infrastructure temporarily built in “Parque da Cidade”. This new infrastructure has 10000 square meters, 80% are covered, and will be called fashion city. There will be 3 “passerelles”, each one with 1000 square meters and the ability to accommodate 1000 spectators. So all fashion shows presented in Oporto between the 22nd and 24th March will take place in this infrastructure, in lines similar to what happens in other major fashion cities like London, New York or Paris.

Oporto Blues Fest – May 2018

After last year’s success, the Oporto Blues Fest will happen again this year between the 18th and 19th May. The festival will take place in the gardens of “Palácio de Cristal” starting at 22h00 everyday.

Beniko Tanaka’s Shadow Theatre – Oporto

The “coal boy” is the name of the production that Beniko Tanaka will present in Oporto during this weekend. Beniko Tanaka is a plastic artist that lives in Lisbon and is well-known by shadow theatre skills.

There will be two sessions: on Saturday between 16h00 and 17h00, and on Sunday, between 15h00 and 16h00. The shows will take place in the second floor of the São Bento da Vitória Monastery.

There is a limit of 70 people per show and all admissions are free. The only thing you need to is to collect a ticket, in the same day of the show, in the monastery reception.

Devexperts chooses Oporto

Devexperts (a german company) decided to choose Oporto as the location for the creation of a new R&D center. This company develops software for financial firms and is targeting Oporto due to its high human capital quality and entrepreneurial support. The company will operate from the Peninsula building, staff recruitment is already underway and everything should be ready by April. Overall, there is an expectation that 80 new jobs are going to be created with this investment.

Devexperts chose to invest in Portugal (Oporto) instead of Czech Republic and Hungary. This is a sign that Oporto possesses very distinctive and important features in terms of attractiveness … not just for tourists, but also for companies!!

Best Start-up Friendly City of Europe – Oporto

The World Excellence Awards ceremony is taking place in Istambul, Turkey, and Oporto managed to achieve the Best Start-up Friendly City of Europe award. This event is sponsored by the WBAF (World Business Angels Investment Forum) and tries to show the best practices around the world in terms of investment and networking incentives, namely for start-ups.

The prize given to Oporto is a clear recognition of the work done by the City Council in helping the development of start-ups, mainly through initiatives, such as the Scaleup Porto. This is the first time that any Portuguese city manages to achieve such an award.

It seems that Oporto is on the right way in many fronts, including incentives for the development of start-ups!!

Oporto – Future City in FT ranking

The fDi – Intelligence Magazine, which is a FT publication, just announced the Future European cities and regions ranking with Oporto featuring in a very honourable 8th place in the category of FDI Strategy for mid-sized cities. In this ranking led by Bordeaux, Oporto is in front of other well-known cities, such as Newcastle or Brno. This is a clear recognition that Oporto is fast becoming an important destination for foreign investment in real estate!!

The fDi prizes will be awarded in Cannes during the biggest European Real Estate fair (MIPIM) that will place on the 13th March.

New Ryanair route: Oporto – Seville

Ryanair announced another route between Oporto and Spain. This is another clear improvement in direct connections to Spain, bringing together Portuguese and Spanish workers and tourists.

From October 2018, there should be three weekly flights between these big cities. According to a press note, tickets are expected to be available for purchase from March.

This just shows that Oporto is becoming a more popular destination all over Europe and that more new routes from other carriers should be unveiled soon!!

Fantasporto 2018

The 38th edition of the Oporto International Film Festival will take place between the 20th February and 4th March 2018. This year’s edition is expected to be one of the biggest so far and should include productions from all continents. The festival will happen in Rivoli theatre, in downtown Oporto, and has been considered sometime ago, as one of the 10 film festivals you must attend during your life.

The 2018 edition adopted the theme “Ethics- The boundaries of Science, Arts and the Cinema” with films, debates and presentations focussing on this particular issue, which is considered very relevant nowadays.

The Time International published its City Life Index 2018 and Oporto managed to get an impressive second place!! Oporto is considered as the best place in the world to make friends, fall in love and keep family links. This is a sign that Oporto is changing for the better and that local residents are quite proud of the significant development the city has witnessed over the past years.

With these high satisfaction levels, Oporto ranked ahead of important cities, such as New York, London or Madrid. Only Chicago did better than Oporto and reached the first place in the index.
